Commercializing Space Capture: Matterport
Easily market, share, and plan your space with Matterport.
Matterport is an all-in-one platform to capture, share, edit, and transform spatial data.
Digital Dollhouse
Matterport is an early player in the digital transformation space. If you’ve been on Redfin or Zillow, you’ve likely seen a Matterport walkthrough on a home listing. Known for their 3D “doll house models”, Matterport produces proprietary hardware that captures and stitches images together using photogrammetry.
With the release of their latest Pro3 camera, Matterport introduces LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology into their stack, allowing customers to scan at faster rates and capture outdoor spaces. Note: We previously wrote about Leica and laser scanning technology, which also uses LiDAR technology and is compatible with Matterport.
The Physical World at Your Fingertips
Matterport’s popularity skyrocketed over the past decade. While there are a growing number of competitors in the space, Matterport’s software and rich building data puts them in an advantageous position. Their moat? 35 billion square feet of data.
This enormous dataset served as the foundation for Matterport’s next venture - Property Intelligence. By leveraging AI, Matterport hopes to automate parts of the design and marketing processes to help businesses scale their design, real estate, facilities, and planning operations. The spaces captured become more than just 3D-walk throughs.
Designer Replacer?
Their new suite of web-based services include automatic floor plan measurements, space planning capabilities, and easy-to-export marketing plans. Should designers be cautious? Rather than see this as a designer/drafter replacer, see this as an augmentation to the work. Putting accessible design tools in the hand of non-professionals is a win-win for everyone. Accurate spatial data allows all parties involved to have a verified source of truth to make real estate decisions on.
With billions of square feet already captured, and billions left to go, the future is bright for Matterport.
